EMDR Intensives

What is an EMDR Intensive?

An EMDR intensive session is an unique approach to trauma therapy. Instead of scheduling hour long sessions weekly, an EMDR intensive session allows you to undergo multiple hours of EMDR therapy per day, either in-person or virtual. During EMDR we mostly work with the brain and body, and you don’t have to talk as much as you would during standard talk therapy. This allows us to do EMDR intensives for three to six hours a day, for multiple days.

People book EMDR Intensives if they are not able to attend weekly sessions due to work or childcare; or if they have severe PTSD symptoms and want to see results faster. They also book EMDR Intensives if their weekly therapist is not trained in EMDR. Some people view an EMDR Intensive as a retreat and an investment in their mental health.

Why do people book EMDR Intensives instead of weekly sessions?

What are the benefits of EMDR Intensives?

  • You will process more information in a shorter amount of time. Instead of working on a memory in hourly weekly sessions for 6 weeks, you can process the memory in a day. Most people experience relief faster.

  • Intensives are highly concentrated and focused on healing, sometimes requiring less time and overall cost to you. During weekly therapy sessions, a big amount of the time goes into “checking in” at the beginning and grounding at the end, this take up EMDR reprocessing time.

  • Reduced traveling cost and time. Clients who are out of town or out of state can take advantage of access to excellent treatment quickly, making only one trip.

  • You can arrange childcare for one day, instead of weekly. This eliminates the need and stress of ongoing help.

Who will benefit from EMDR Intensives?

Most people will benefit from EMDR intensives, although people who struggle with severe dissociation might benefit more from weekly therapy sessions.

What can we work on in an EMDR Intensive?

We can address childhood trauma, sexual assault or abuse. We can also work on unhelpful beliefs related to depression and anxiety such “I am not good enough” or “I did something wrong”.
